Acts 3 Commentary
ACTS 3:1 1 Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.
At what time did Peter and John go to the temple in Jerusalem?
"The ninth hour" (Acts 3:1), which is 9 hours after the sunrise, which was deemed to be at 6 AM.
So it was 3 PM.
Was this the only "hour of prayer" (Acts 3:1) at the temple?
The times for people to pray on their own at the temple were set as the third, the sixth and the ninth hours, which correspond to 9 AM, noon, and 3 PM.
Peter and John were going to the last hour of prayer for that day.
Why did they need to go "up" (Acts 3:1) to the temple?
The temple was built atop the temple mount, a plateau on the east side of Jerusalem that was at a slightly higher elevation than the rest of the city (photo).
