    Elbaradei, Mohamed (1942–)

    Mohamed (Mostafa) ElBaradei (Muhammad al-Baraday) is an Egyptian diplomat, the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and a co-winner of the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize.

    ElBaradei was born in Cairo, Egypt, on 17 June 1942 to a family of Muslim Egyptians.

  • His father, Mostafa, was a lawyer who served as president of the Egyptian Bar Association, and his maternal grandfather, Ali Haydar Hijazi, sat on Egypt's supreme court. Mohamed ElBaradei received his B.A. in law from Cairo University in 1962.

    He began working with the Egyptian foreign ministry in 1964, and served with the Egyptian delegation to the United Nations (UN) in New York. While there, he received an LL.M.
