María Herrera-Sobek is Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Academic Policy at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
She is a Professor in the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at UCSB and holds the Luis Leal Endowed Chair . She was Chair of the Chicana/o Studies Department at UCSB (2000-2001), co-founder and Director of the Chicano/Latino Studies Program at the University of California, Irvine (1993-1996) and co-founder of the Latin American Studies Program at UC Irvine.
She taught at the University of California, Irvine, for twenty-one years (1975-96) and has been a Visiting Professor at Harvard University and at Stanford University.
Herrera-Sobek is the author of many books including the Bracero Experience: Elitelore versus Folklore(1979); The Mexican Corrido: A Feminist Analysis (1990); and
